Sedalia, Missouri
Homes for Sale and Real Estate

Area Description

Sedalia is located in the heart of West Central Missouri in Pettis County and offers plenty of small town charm not far from Kansas City.

Known as the State Fair City, Sedalia was founded as a railroad town in 1860 and named for founder Gen. George R. Smith’s daughter Sarah, whose nickname was Sed.

Sedalia is home to well-known events such as the Missouri State Fair and the Scott Joplin International Ragtime Festival, as well as tourist destinations such as the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art and the Trail’s End Landmark. The State Fair also lends its name to State Fair Community College.

Full of history, residents can take a trip back in time in their own city to the Katy Depot, Bothwell Historic State Lodge and downtown Sedalia, which includes local shops, restaurants and the historic Hotel Bothwell.

Other fun locations include Sedalia’s numerous parks, including Liberty and Centennial parks that house the city’s two outdoor pools, many restaurants, stores, a movie theater and bowling alley. For additional exercise and views of America’s heartland, Sedalia is proud to be a city along the 240-mile Katy Trail, a nearly cross-state trail that was converted from the Katy Line railbed that passes near the Katy Depot.

Sedalia’s location at the intersection of U.S. highways 50 and 65 gives residents and businesses easy access to U.S. Interstate 70 as well as metropolitan areas in Kansas City, St. Louis, Jefferson City, and Springfield and recreational opportunities at the Lake of the Ozarks.
